Abu Al-Aliyah Abra’ (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Ibn Ziyad delayed the prayer, so Abdullah bin Samit came to me. I gave him a chair and he sat on it. Then I told him about Ibn Ziyad’s action. He bit his lips, then struck his hand on my thigh and said: I had asked Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) the same question as you have asked me, so he struck my thigh just as I have struck yours, and said: Indeed, I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) the same question as you have asked me, so he struck my thigh just as I have struck yours, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Perform the prayer at its (prescribed) time. Then if you catch the prayer (in congregation) with these rulers, then pray (with them), and do not say: Indeed, I have already prayed, so I will not pray (again).” This is the narration of Bundar, and in the narration of Yahya bin Hakeem, it is mentioned that he bit both his lips.
And the clarification is that the first is an individual obligatory prayer, and the second is a supererogatory prayer in congregation, contrary to the statement of those who claim that the congregational prayer is the obligation, not the individual prayer, and the prohibition against abandoning the supererogatory prayer behind the imam who is performing the obligatory prayer, even if he has delayed the prayer from its time.
