It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was leading the prayer when he removed his shoes, so the Companions also removed their shoes. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer with salam, he said: "Why did you remove your shoes?" They replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we saw that you removed your shoes, so we also removed ours." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to me and informed me that there was impurity on my shoes (so I removed them). Therefore, when any one of you comes to the mosque, he should turn his shoes over and look at them; if there is any impurity on them, he should wipe them against the ground to clean them, and then he may pray in them." This is the narration of Yazid bin Harun, while in the narration of Abu al-Walid it is stated: "Indeed, Jibreel (peace be upon him) informed me that there was impurity or filth on them."
And the evidence that if the one praying performs prayer in shoes and a garment that are pure according to his knowledge, then it becomes clear to him that the shoes or the garment were not pure, what has passed of his prayer is valid for him and he is not required to repeat it, is that a person is only commanded to pray in a garment that is pure according to his knowledge, not according to what is hidden with Allah.
