This contains evidence against the position of those scholars who claim that water is pure and washing the vessel is a devotional act, because it is impossible that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would command to pour away (and waste) pure, non-impure water.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When a dog drinks from the vessel of any one of you, he should pour out that (liquid), and he should wash that vessel seven times. And when the strap of any one of your (shoes) breaks, he should not walk in that (shoe) until he has it repaired."

Benefits:
➊ These ahadith are evidence that any vessel into which a dog puts its mouth, both the drink contained in it and the vessel itself become impure (najis). Because the command to wash such a vessel seven times and to discard the drink is a strong proof that both the drink and the vessel have become impure. Furthermore, these ahadith are a strong proof for the position that if impurity falls into less than two pots (qullatayn) of water, that water becomes impure merely by the impurity falling into it.
➋ This hadith is evidence that it is obligatory (wajib) to wash seven times any impure vessel into which a dog has put its mouth. This is the madhhab of al-Shafi‘i, Ahmad, and the majority of scholars, but Abu Hanifah says:
It is sufficient to wash such a vessel three times.
Nawawi states: The purpose of washing with earth (soil) is that earth should be mixed into the water so that it becomes turbid, and there is no difference between putting earth into the water, pouring water onto the earth, or taking turbid water from somewhere and washing the vessel with it (all these methods are valid for the purification of the vessel). However, merely rubbing earth on the place of impurity is not sufficient. Also, this hadith is evidence that in a small amount of water, the water becomes impure merely by impurity falling into it, even if none of its characteristics change. Because when a dog puts its mouth into a vessel, usually none of the characteristics of the water change.
