Hadith 91

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) intended to perform ablution, one of his noble wives said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have performed ablution with this (water)." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ablution and said: "Nothing makes water impure." This is the narration of Ahmad bin Muqaddam.

Benefits:

This hadith is evidence that water used for ablution (wudu) does not become impure, and the act does not remove the water’s purity. Therefore, the Hanafi position—that water loses its purifying capacity after being used—is not correct. Likewise, the position of the Shafi’i, Ahmad, Hasan al-Basri, Ata’, Nakha’i, Zuhri, Mak’hul, and Ibn Tahir rahimahullah is also that used water (ma’ musta’mal) is pure and purifying, and its ability to purify and remove impurity is not nullified by use.
