Hadith 90

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I went to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and I heard her saying that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would come out of the toilet, he would say « غُفْرَانَكَ » "O Allah, I seek Your forgiveness." (The Imam says) Muhammad bin Aslam narrated to us from Ubaidullah bin Musa, and he narrated from Isra'il in the same manner.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:

➊ After relieving oneself, it is a recommended act (mustahabb) to say «غُفْرَانَكَ» when exiting the toilet or after finishing urination and defecation in the open.

➋ There are two explanations for why the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would say «غُفْرَانَكَ» after relieving himself:

1. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would remain engaged in the remembrance of Allah at all times except during the state of relieving himself; therefore, due to not being able to engage in dhikr during this state, he would seek forgiveness (istighfar).

2. Since a person is unable to fully express gratitude for Allah’s favors—such as eating and drinking, digesting them, the arrangement of food for the benefit of the human body, and the appropriate timing of its expulsion—thus, acknowledging his shortcoming in giving thanks for these blessings, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would turn to seeking forgiveness.

Except for this authentic hadith, all other supplications found in narrations regarding exiting the toilet are weak (da‘if).
