Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that there was a dispute among the Banu Amr bin Awf, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was informed about it. He (peace be upon him) performed the Zuhr prayer, then went to them to reconcile between them. Then he (peace be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): “O Bilal, when the time for Asr prayer comes and I have not returned, then tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.” So when the time for Asr prayer came, Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the adhan, then the iqamah, and said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him): “Step forward.” So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward and began the prayer. During this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also arrived and, moving the people aside, advanced until he stood behind Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says that the people started clapping, and when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) started the prayer, he would not pay attention here and there. Then, when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) realized that the clapping was continuous, he wanted to turn, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gestured to him to continue the prayer. He (peace be upon him) gestured to him to continue the prayer, so Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) continued to praise Allah for a while at the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to “continue the prayer.” Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) walked back on his heels and moved behind. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw this, he advanced and led the people in prayer. Then, when he (peace be upon him) completed his prayer, he said: “O Abu Bakr, when I had gestured to you, what prevented you from continuing the prayer?” Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: “It is not befitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in prayer.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the people: “When something happens to you in your prayer, the men should say « سُبْحَانَ اللَٰه » and the women should clap.” In the narration of Ibn Abi Hazim, these words are present: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gestured to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in this way and ordered him to continue the prayer, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hand and said « الحَمْدُ لِلَٰه », then walked back on his heels. In the narration of ‘Abdul A’la, these words are present: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gestured to him to remain as he was (i.e., to continue the prayer), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hands at the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and praised Allah. Then he walked back on his heels. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that some narrators have reported additional wording in the hadith compared to others.
