Hadith 76

The command to use an odd number of stones refers to an odd number that is more than one, such as three or more (for example, five, seven, etc.), because sometimes the term "odd" is also applied to one. However, using only one stone for istinja is not sufficient, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded that less than three stones should not be considered sufficient for istinja.
Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you uses stones for istinja (cleaning after relieving oneself), he should use three stones."

Benefits:

➊ Performing istinja (purification after relieving oneself) with stones and clods is permissible, and for the validity of istinja, it is necessary to use at least three stones. Using one stone that has three edges or using two stones for istinja is insufficient, and this does not remove the impurity. Al-Shawkani says:

The hadith of Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu is evidence that it is obligatory to use three stones for istinja.

➋ It is necessary to use stones and clods for istinja in an odd number, and the minimum odd number is three. If purification is not achieved with three stones, then purification should be sought while maintaining an odd number (five, seven, nine, etc.), until one is certain that the impurity has been removed.

➌ Nawawi rahimahullah says that it is the view of all the scholars that the use of stones for istinja is not specified; rather, cloth, wood, etc., can also serve in place of stones for istinja, because the purpose of istinja is to remove feces, and this objective can be achieved by using things other than stones as well.

➍ Every pure solid substance that removes the actual impurity can serve in place of a stone, provided that its use (for istinja, etc.) is not prohibited and it is not a part of any animal.
