It is narrated from Abu Hazim (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: I saw Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) performing ablution, and he was letting the water reach up to his armpits. I asked him the reason for this, so he said: Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Verily, the adornment (of the believer) will reach up to the places touched by ablution." (That is why I am letting the water reach up to my armpits.)

Benefits:
This hadith is evidence that wherever the water of ablution (wudu) reaches on the limbs, that portion of the limbs will be radiant on the Day of Resurrection. However, to infer from this that one should exceed the prescribed limits of the limbs in washing during ablution is not correct. Nevertheless, the extent to which the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) used to wash their limbs, one may wash to that extent and thereby increase the radiance.
