Hadith 60

Hazrat Marwan Asghar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I saw Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) make his mount face the Qiblah, then he sat facing it and began to urinate. I said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, was this not prohibited?" He replied, "Why not. Indeed, it was prohibited in the open space. But when there is something screening between you and the Qiblah, then there is no harm."

Benefits:

These ahadith are evidence that it is permissible to face towards or turn one's back to the Qiblah while urinating or defecating in a toilet or behind a barrier, and there is no objection in this. However, in the case of urinating or defecating in a toilet or behind a barrier, it is a recommended (mustahabb) act not to face towards or turn one's back to the Qiblah. Also, some people consider this to be a special characteristic (khasiyyah) of Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but there is no established evidence for such exclusivity; therefore, this action of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) will be understood as indicating permissibility.
