نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ خِدَاشٍ ، نا عَمْرُو بْنُ هَارُونَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ : أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " قَرَأَ فِي الصَّلاةِ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ سورة الفاتحة آية 1 ، فَعَدَّهَا آيَةً ، وَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ سورة الفاتحة آية 2 آيَتَيْنِ ، وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ سورة الفاتحة آية 5 وَجَمَعَ خَمْسَ أَصَابِعِهِ "
Lady Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recited « بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ » in prayer, he counted it as one verse, and with « الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ » he counted two verses. And after reciting « وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ », he gathered all five of his fingers together (meaning he counted it as the fifth verse).
