Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that we participated with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the battle of Dhat al-Riqa‘ at Nakhl (the region of Najd). (During the battle) a Muslim killed the wife of a polytheist. (After the battle) when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to return, the husband of that woman came, who was not present before. When he was informed (about the killing of his wife), he swore that he would not rest until he had shed blood among the companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So he set out in pursuit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) camped at a place and said: “Who will guard us tonight?” (Upon hearing the words of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) a Muhajir companion and an Ansari companion volunteered for this task, both said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we will perform this service. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Both of you stand guard at the mouth of the mountain pass.” Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions descended from the valley towards the mountain pass. When both companions reached the mouth of the pass, the Ansari said to the Muhajir: Which part of the night do you prefer that I relieve you in, the first part or the last? He said: Relieve me in the first part (i.e., let me rest in the first part). So the Muhajir companion lay down and slept, and the Ansari companion stood up and began to pray. Meanwhile, the husband of the murdered woman arrived. When he saw the shadow of the Ansari companion from afar, he recognized that he was one of the guards and sentinels of his people. So he shot an arrow at him, which became embedded in his (body). Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he pulled out the arrow and put it aside, and continued in his prayer. Then he shot a second arrow, which again became embedded in him; he pulled it out and put it aside and continued praying. He shot a third arrow, which became embedded in him; he pulled it out (from his body) and put it (on the ground), then bowed and prostrated (completed the prayer), then woke up his companion and said: Get up, I have been wounded (by arrows). So he (the Muhajir) woke up startled. When the (polytheist) saw both of them, he realized that they had become aware of him, so he fled. When the Muhajir companion saw the Ansari covered in blood, he said: Subhan Allah, why did you not wake me up when he shot the first arrow at you? He replied: I was reciting a surah which I used to recite before, and I did not like to leave it without completing it. But when he kept targeting me with arrows, I bowed and (after completing the prayer) informed you. By Allah, if I had not feared neglecting the border which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded me to guard and protect, he would have ended my life before I left or completed the surah. This is the narration of Muhammad bin ‘Isa.
