Hazrat Bakr bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a Bedouin came to the Sabeel and drank Nabidh. Then he said, "What is the matter with the people of this house that they are giving people Nabidh to drink, while their cousins are giving milk and honey to drink? Are they doing this out of miserliness or are they themselves in need?" So, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "Bring this person to me." At that time, his eyesight had gone. That person was brought to him, so he said, "We are not needy, nor are we miserly, but the real matter is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Masjid al-Haram while he was riding a camel, and behind him was Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them both) riding. He asked for water, so we gave him Nabidh to drink. He drank it and gave the remaining Nabidh to Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them both). Then he said: 'You have done a very good and beautiful thing. Do likewise.' Therefore, we do not want to change this practice."
Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this narration is of the same kind about which we have already mentioned in our books, that Allah Almighty declares something permissible in a general way, then through another verse, explains through the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the thing declared permissible in general is not completely permissible, rather, a part of it is permissible. Similarly, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) declares something permissible in general, then afterwards clarifies that by the thing declared permissible in general, he means a part of it, not the whole thing, as the statement of Allah Almighty is: « وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ » [ سورة البقرة : 187 ] "Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread." In this verse, eating and drinking is mentioned in general, but in another place it is clarified that some foods and some drinks are made lawful; not all foods and drinks are permissible. This is a lengthy chapter which we have mentioned in several places in our books. Similarly, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made it permissible to drink that Nabidh from the Sabeel which is not intoxicating, because he has stated that intoxicating things are forbidden.
