Hazrat Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to send the weak members of his household (from Muzdalifah to Mina) ahead of time. Then some of them would reach Mina at the time of Fajr prayer, while others would arrive after that. When they reached Mina, they would perform the stoning of Jamrah Aqabah. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had granted permission to these people. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I have mentioned the chains of narration of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas’s (may Allah be pleased with them both) narration in Kitab al-Kabir, that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O my sons, do not throw pebbles at the Jamrah until the sun has risen.” I do not know of the chain of narration of any of these reports that any of them are established, but if even one chain is proven authentic, its meaning would be that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only forbade those individuals from stoning before sunrise whom he had sent from Muzdalifah at night. He did not forbid all listeners. Because the hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) is evidence that he granted permission to women and the weak to perform the stoning before sunrise. In this way, the hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) does not contradict the hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), provided that the hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is established in terms of its chain. In my view, it is permissible for weak women to perform the stoning at night; the evidence for this is the hadith which I will mention in the next chapter, insha’Allah.
