Hadith 2814

Hazrat Salim bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Abdul Malik bin Marwan wrote a letter to Hajjaj bin Yusuf, ordering him not to oppose Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the performance of the rites of Hajj. Therefore, when the day of Arafat came, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to Hajjaj bin Yusuf as soon as the sun declined; I was also with him. He came near Hajjaj’s tent and called out to him, “Where is Hajjaj?” So Hajjaj, wrapped in a sheet, came to him. He said, “O Abu Abdur Rahman, tell me, what is the command?” He (Ibn Umar) said, “If you want to act upon the Sunnah of the Prophet, then come now.” He replied, “I will pour water over my body and come with you right away.” So they waited for him until he came out, and he began to walk between me and my respected father. I said to him, “If you want to attain the Sunnah of the Prophet, then keep the sermon short and hasten to the standing (wuquf).” So he began to look towards Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) so that he could hear the same thing from him. When Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) sensed his desire, he said, “Salim has spoken the truth.”
