(237) بَابُ قِصَرُ الْخُطْبَةِ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ.Chapter: Shortening the sermon on the Day of ‘Arafah
Hadith 2810
حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنِي مَالِكٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ ، جَاءَ لِلْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ حِينَ زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ ، وَأَنَا مَعَهُ ، فَقَالَ : الرَّوَاحُ إِنْ كُنْتَ تُرِيدُ السُّنَّةَ ، فَقَالَ : هَذِهِ السَّاعَةُ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ سَالِمٌ : فَقُلْتُ لِلْحَجَّاجِ : " إِنْ كُنْتَ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تُصِيبَ الْيَوْمَ السُّنَّةَ ، فَأَقْصِرِ الْخُطْبَةَ ، وَعَجِّلِ الصَّلاةَ " ، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ : صَدَقَ
It is narrated from Hazrat Salim bin Abdullah that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to Hajjaj bin Yusuf after the sun had declined on the day of Arafat; I was also with him. He said, "If you want to act upon the Sunnah of the Prophet, then come (and deliver the sermon)." He (Hajjaj) asked, "Should I come now?" He replied, "Yes, come now." Hazrat Salim narrates that I said to Hajjaj, "If today you want to act upon the Sunnah of the Prophet, then deliver a brief sermon and lead the prayer quickly." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "Salim has spoken the truth."
