Hadith 270

Hazrat Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah and Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with them), when Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, what is your opinion if a person becomes junub and does not find water for a month, should he continue to perform tayammum?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "He will not perform tayammum (nor will he pray)." So Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Have you not heard the statement of Sayyiduna Ammar to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), (in which he says) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me for an important task, and (on the way) I became junub and did not find water, so I rolled in the earth like an animal (and prayed). Then (after returning) I informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'It would have been sufficient for you to strike your hands on the earth, then wipe them together, then wipe your face and both hands with them.'" Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in this hadith, the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) « ثُمَّ تَمْسَحَ » means to shake off the dust from both hands. (Because) "al-nafd" means to rub one palm with the other so that the dust on them falls off.
