Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "We become junub (in a state of major ritual impurity) and we do not have water (so how should we perform the prayer)?" Then he mentioned the incident of Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) along with him. He says that Hazrat Ammar said, "So I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and I told him about this incident." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It would have been sufficient for you to do like this with your two hands." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his two hands on the earth, then shook them off, then blew on them, and then wiped his face and both hands with them. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that in the chain of this hadith, Imam Shu’bah has inserted Dhir (the narrator) between Salamah bin Kuhail and Sa’id bin Abdur Rahman. Imam Thawri narrated this hadith from Salamah, and he from Abu Malik and Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman bin Abza (may Allah be pleased with him), and they from Abdur Rahman bin Abza (may Allah be pleased with him). However, in the narration of Imam Thawri and Shu’bah, there is no mention of "shaking the dust off the hands."
