Imam Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, says that to the best of my knowledge, it is correct that in the narration of Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, the act of applying oil is that of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, and not of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. And the narrator Mansur (who has attributed this act to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) is a more proficient and reliable scholar and memorizer of hadith than many narrators like Farqad Sabkhi. Similarly, Hajjaj bin Minhal has also narrated from Imam Hammad. Imam Waki’ ibn Jarrah has also narrated (that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) used to apply oil at the time of putting on ihram. Hisham bin Jameel also narrates from Imam Hammad that when he intended to put on ihram, he would apply oil. Imam Abu Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, says: Therefore, according to the words narrated by Imam Waki’ and Hisham bin Jameel (that at the time of putting on ihram or intending to put on ihram, oil was applied), it is permissible to apply even the best fragrant oil, provided it is applied at the time of intending to put on ihram, because the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, applied the best fragrance mixed with musk at the time of intending to put on ihram. And musk is the highest and finest fragrance, as the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has stated. (Therefore, oil can be applied at the time of ihram, as narrated by several students of Imam Hammad. Whereas Farqad Sabkhi’s narration of applying oil in the state of ihram as a marfu’ narration is his error.) Muhammad bin Yahya says that the meaning of “ghair muqattat” is “non-fragrant.”
