Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah

Hazrat Ali Al-Azdi narrates that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) taught him that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would sit upright on his mount and was about to set out on a journey, he would recite « اللهُ أَكْبَرُ » three times, then he would recite this supplication: « سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا البِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى ، اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ، وَالْخَليفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ، وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ، وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ » "Glory be to Him Who has subjected this (mount) to us, and we could never have accomplished this (by ourselves), and surely to our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You for goodness and piety in this journey of ours, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its length for us. O Allah, You are our companion in the journey and the guardian of our family. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships and difficulties of the journey, from returning with grief, and from seeing any evil in our family and wealth." Then when he would return, he would recite the same supplication and add these words: « آيِبُونَ، تائِبُونَ، عَابِدُونَ، لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ » "We are returning, repenting of our sins, worshipping our Lord, and praising Him."
