(29) بَابُ اسْتِحْبَابِ مُصَاحَبَةِ الْأَرْبَعَةِ فِي السَّفَرِ29 Subchapter: Recommending traveling in groups of four
Hadith 2538
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَلَفٍ الْعَسْقَلانِيُّ ، وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ ، وَعَمِّي إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ يُونُسَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " خَيْرُ الصَّحَابَةِ أَرْبَعَةٌ ، وَخَيْرُ السَّرَايَا أَرْبَعُمِائَةٍ ، وَخَيْرُ الْجُيُوشِ أَرْبَعَةُ آلافٍ ، وَلَنْ يُغْلَبَ اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا مِنْ قِلَّةٍ "
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(On a journey) the best group of companions is four. And the best military detachment consists of four hundred fighters, and the best army is one whose number is four thousand. And an army comprising twelve thousand soldiers will not be defeated due to lack of numbers."
