It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day, after finishing the morning prayer, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the women in the mosque and, standing near them, said: “O assembly of women, I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you who can take away the intellect of a wise man. And indeed, I have seen that the majority of you will be among the inhabitants of Hell on the Day of Resurrection, so strive to seek nearness to Allah as much as you can.” Among the women was the honorable wife of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him). She returned to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and narrated to him the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then took her jewelry and set out. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, “Where are you going with this jewelry?” She replied, “I want to give it in charity to seek nearness to Allah and His Messenger.” He said, “Good for you! Give it in charity to me and my children; we are more deserving of it.” She replied, “No, not until I go and ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” So she went and sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The noble Companions said, “O Messenger of Allah, Zainab is seeking permission.” He asked, “Which Zainab is seeking permission?” They replied, “The wife of Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him).” He said, “Grant her permission.” So she entered upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I heard your statement about charity, so I went back and told Ibn Mas’ud, then I took my jewelry and wanted to give it in charity to seek nearness to Allah and His Messenger, hoping that Allah would save me from the people of Hell. But Ibn Mas’ud said to me, ‘Give this jewelry in charity to me and my children, for we are more deserving of it.’ So I said, ‘Alright, I will ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).’” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Give it in charity to Ibn Mas’ud and his children; they are more deserving of it.”
