Hazrat Iyad bin Abdullah bin Abi Sarh narrates that people mentioned Sadaqat al-Fitr in the presence of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said: "I will only give that which I used to give during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that is, one sa’ of dates, or one sa’ of wheat, or one sa’ of barley, or one sa’ of cheese." Then one of the people said to him: "If two mudd (half a sa’) of wheat are given, then?" He replied: "No, this is the price set by Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him); I neither accept it nor will I act upon it." Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "The mention of wheat in the narration of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) is not preserved, and I do not know whether this is a mistake of the narrator (who added it in this narration). The words in this narration, that a person said to Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), 'If two mudd of wheat are given, what is the ruling?'—up to the end of the hadith—are evidence that the mention of wheat at the beginning of this story is a mistake and an error of the narrator, because if Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) had not stated that he used to give one sa’ of wheat as Sadaqat al-Fitr during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then the statement of that person, 'Or half a sa’ of wheat should be given,' would become meaningless."
