(121) بَابُ ذِكْرِ أَوَّلِ مَا أُحْدِثَ الْأَمْرُ بِنِصْفِ صَاعٍ حِنْطَةَ، وَذِكْرِ أَوَّلِ مَنْ أَحْدَثَهُ.121 Subchapter: When and who first introduced giving half a sa’ of wheat
Hadith 2408
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ حُجْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ هُوَ ابْنُ قَيْسٍ الْفَرَّاءُ ، عَنْ عِيَاضِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " كُنَّا نُخْرِجُ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَاعًا مِنْ طَعَامٍ ، أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ أَقِطٍ ، أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ ، أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ زَبِيبٍ ، أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ ، فَلَمْ نَزَلْ نُخْرِجُهُ ، حَتَّى قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ مِنَ الشَّامِ حَاجًّا أَوْ مُعْتَمِرًا ، وَهُوَ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَلِيفَةٌ ، فَخَطَبَ النَّاسَ عَلَى مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ ، فَقَالَ : إِنِّي لأَرَى مُدَّيْنِ مِنْ سَمْرَاءِ الشَّامِ تَعْدِلُ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ ، فَكَانَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ ذَكَّرَ النَّاسَ بِالْمُدَّيْنِ حِينَئِذٍ "
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to give Sadaqat al-Fitr as one sa’ of food, or one sa’ of cheese, or one sa’ of dates, or one sa’ of raisins, or one sa’ of barley. Then we continued to give Sadaqat al-Fitr in this way until Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us from Syria for Hajj or ‘Umrah. At that time, he was the caliph. He addressed the people from the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he mentioned Sadaqat al-Fitr and said: "In my opinion, two mudd of wheat from the land of Syria are equal to one sa’ of dates." In this way, he was the first person to mention (giving) two mudd (of wheat) for Sadaqat al-Fitr at that time.
