Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, some of the Arab tribes became apostates. (Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, was appointed as the Caliph, and he intended to fight the apostates.) Upon this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Abu Bakr, do you want to fight the Arabs?" So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer and pay zakat.'" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "By Allah, if they withhold from me even a young she-goat which they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I will surely fight them for its payment." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says, "Then when I saw that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was fully determined in his opinion, I also realized that this was the truth." Both narrators have narrated the hadith in similar words. However, the narrator Bundar has narrated these words differently: "لَقَاتَلْتُهُمْ عَلَيْهَهِ" ("I will fight them for it").
