It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed i'tikaf during the first ten days of Ramadan. Then he performed i'tikaf during the second ten days as well, in a Turkish tent, at the door of which a mat was hung. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took hold of that mat with his blessed hand, removed it, and placed it in the corner of the tent. Then he put his blessed head outside and spoke to the people, so they came close to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, I performed i'tikaf in the first ten days seeking Laylat al-Qadr, then I performed i'tikaf in the middle ten days. Then an angel came to me in a dream and I was informed that Laylat al-Qadr is in the last ten nights. Therefore, whoever among you wishes to perform i'tikaf, let him do so." Thus, the people performed i'tikaf with him (in the last ten days). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, I was shown that night in the odd nights, and on its morning I prostrated in mud." Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached the morning of the twenty-first night, and he had performed voluntary prayers until morning, it rained and the roof of the mosque began to leak. Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw the mud. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished the morning prayer and came out, there was mud on his forehead and nose, and that was the twenty-first night in the last ten days. This hadith is of the highest rank.
