It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Juhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established a bond of brotherhood between Sayyiduna Salman and Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with them both). So Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) came to meet Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) and saw Sayyiduna Umm Darda (may Allah be pleased with her) wearing dirty and shabby clothes. He asked her: "What has happened to you (why are you in such a state)?" She replied: "Your brother has no interest in the world (so I have no need to adorn myself)." In the narration of Yunus, there is this addition: "He fasts during the day and spends the night in voluntary prayers."

Then when Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) came home, he welcomed Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) and presented food to him and said: "Eat." So Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Will you not eat, and I should eat? I will not eat until you eat." So he ate with Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), and spent the night at his place. Then, when the last part of the night came, Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) got up to pray, but Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) stopped him. Then, when the time for Fajr approached, he said: "Now get up." So both of them got up and performed the Tahajjud prayer. Then Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Indeed, your Lord has a right over you, your soul has a right over you, your family has a right over you, and your guest has a right over you, so give each one who has a right their due."

Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this, he said: "Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) has spoken the truth."
