Hadith 2042

Ayub says that Abu Qilabah narrated this hadith to me, then he said to me, “Do you wish to know the teacher from whom I heard this hadith?” Then he informed me about him, so I met him. He said, “My close relative, Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated to me that I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) regarding my camels that had been seized. I came to you (peace be upon him) at a time when you were eating, so you (peace be upon him) invited me to eat. I said, ‘I am fasting.’ The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Come near,’ or he said, ‘Come (and eat), I will inform you about this matter. Indeed, Allah Almighty has excused the traveler from fasting and half of the prayer. And the pregnant and breastfeeding woman is also excused (from fasting).’ After this, Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say, ‘Alas, I wish I had accepted the invitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and eaten from his food.’ Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this narration belongs to the same category which I have mentioned in Kitab al-Iman, that the term ‘half’ can be applied to any part of something, even if that part is not exactly half. In this narration, the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that Allah Almighty has excused the traveler from ‘shatr’ (half) of the prayer. Here, ‘shatr’ means half. In this place, ‘shatr’ does not mean side, direction, or orientation. My intention is Allah Almighty’s statement « فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ » [ سورة البقرة : 144 ] “So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque.” (Here, ‘shatr’ means side and direction.) And Allah Almighty has not excused the traveler from exactly half of the prayer, because Allah Almighty has not excused the traveler from any part of the Fajr and Maghrib prayers.
