Hadith 2036
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الصَّبَّاحِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبِيدَةُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورٌ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : " خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ يُرِيدُ مَكَّةَ , فَصَامَ حَتَّى أَتَى عُسْفَانَ , فَدَعَا بِإِنَاءٍ , فَوَضَعَهُ عَلَى يَدِهِ , حَتَّى نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ النَّاسُ , ثُمَّ أَفْطَرَ " . وَكَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ : مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ , وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ . هَذَا حَدِيثُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ . وَقَالَ يُوسُفُ : " سَافَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَصَامَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ عُسْفَانَ , ثُمَّ دَعَا بِإِنَاءٍ , فَشَرِبَ نَهَارًا ، لِيَرَاهُ النَّاسُ , ثُمَّ أَفْطَرَ حَتَّى قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ " . قَالَ : كَانَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ : صَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي السَّفَرِ , وَأَفْطَرَ , وَمَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ , وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ . قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : هَذَا الْخَبَرُ يُصَرِّحُ أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ كَانَ يَرَى صَوْمَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي السَّفَرِ فِي الابْتِدَاءِ , وَإِفْطَارَهُ بَعْدُ , هَذَا مِنَ الْجِنْسِ الْمُبَاحِ أَنَّ كِلا الْفِعْلَيْنِ جَائِزٌ , لا أَنَّ إِفْطَارَهُ بَعْدَ بُلُوغِهِ عُسْفَانَ كَانَ نَسْخًا لِمَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ صَوْمِهِ
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah Munawwarah with the intention of going to Makkah Mukarramah, and he kept fasting during the journey until he reached the place of Usfan. There, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for a vessel of water and placed it on his blessed hand until the people saw it, then he broke his fast. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say that whoever wishes may fast, and whoever wishes may not fast. This is the narration of Hasan bin Muhammad. In the narration of Yusuf, it is stated that "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) traveled in the month of Ramadan," and he kept fasting until he reached the place of Usfan. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for a vessel of water and drank it during the day so that the people could see him. Then he continued to leave fasting until he reached Makkah Mukarramah. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to narrate that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept fasts during travel and also left fasts. Therefore, whoever wishes may fast, and whoever wishes may not fast. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this hadith explicitly shows that, according to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) fasting during travel at first and then not fasting later is of the permissible type, and both actions are correct and allowed. It does not mean that breaking the fast upon reaching Usfan (and not fasting for the rest of the journey) abrogates the initial ruling of fasting.
