It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was a person who frequently experienced madhi (pre-seminal fluid). I used to perform ghusl (ritual bath) in the winter season so much that my back cracked due to the cold (it started to hurt). I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), or it was conveyed to him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Do not do this (ghusl); when you see madhi (discharged), wash your private part and perform wudu as you do for prayer, and when semen is discharged, then perform ghusl." Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: « لا تفعل » "Do not do" is a word of prohibition; by this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) meant to negate the obligation of ghusl upon the discharge of madhi.
