It is narrated from Sayyiduna Harith Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah, the Exalted, revealed to Yahya (peace be upon him) to act upon five words and to command the Children of Israel to act upon them as well. Then, as if he delayed in carrying out this task, ‘Isa (peace be upon him) came to him and said: Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, has commanded you with five words that you should act upon them and command the Children of Israel to act upon them as well. So either you inform them, or I will inform them. Yahya (peace be upon him) said: O my brother, do not do this, for I fear that if you inform them before I do, I may be swallowed up by the earth. So he gathered the Children of Israel in Bayt al-Maqdis until the mosque was filled, and people sat in the corridors and balconies. Then he addressed them and said: Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, has revealed to me five things that I should act upon and command the Children of Israel to act upon as well. The first of them is that you do not associate anything with Allah, for the example of one who associates partners with Allah is like a man who bought a slave with his pure wealth of gold or silver, then settled him in his house and said: Work and give me your wages. But he works and gives his wages to someone other than his master. Which of you would like his slave to do such a thing? So Allah, the Exalted, created you and provides for you, so do not associate anyone with Him. And when you stand for prayer, do not look around, for Allah, the Exalted, turns His noble face towards the face of His servant as long as he does not turn away. And I command you to fast, and its example is like a man among a group who has a pouch of musk. Every one of them likes to smell its fragrance. And indeed, the smell of the fasting person is purer to Allah than the fragrance of musk. And I command you to give charity, and its example is like a man whom the enemy captured and tied his hands to his neck, and then they brought him close to be executed. So he began to say: Can I ransom myself and gain freedom by giving you something? So he started giving them every small and big thing until he ransomed himself and gained freedom. And I command you to remember Allah much, and the example of the remembrance of Allah is like a man whom a swift enemy pursues until he takes refuge in a strong fortress. Likewise, a servant cannot protect himself from Satan except by the remembrance of Allah.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “And I also command you with five things which Allah, the Exalted, has commanded me: (1) To stick to the congregation, (2) to listen to the leader, (3) and to obey, (4) to migrate, (5) and to strive in the way of Allah. And whoever separates himself from the congregation even a handspan has removed the collar (bond and covenant) of faith and Islam from his neck, unless he returns. And whoever speaks the words of ignorance is from the people of Hell.” It was said to him: Even if he fasts and prays? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Even if he fasts and prays. Call with the call of Allah, the One who named you Muslims, believers, and servants of Allah with His call.”
