Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed us on the last day of Sha’ban and said: “O people, a great month has come upon you. It is a blessed month. In it is a night which is better than a thousand months. Allah Almighty has made fasting during this month obligatory and standing in its nights voluntary. Whoever draws near to Allah in it with a good deed, it is as if he has performed an obligatory act in other months. And whoever performs an obligatory act in it, it is as if he has performed seventy obligatory acts in other months. It is the month of patience, and the reward of patience is Paradise. It is the month of sympathy and compassion. In this month, the sustenance of the believer is increased. Whoever gives iftar to a fasting person in this month, it will be a cause for the forgiveness of his sins and for freeing his neck from the Fire, and he will receive a reward equal to that of the fasting person, without the reward of the fasting person being diminished in the least.” The Companions said, “Not all of us have the means to give iftar to a fasting person.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah gives this reward even to the one who gives a fasting person a single date, or a sip of water, or a sip of diluted milk to break his fast. The first part of this month is mercy, the middle part is forgiveness, and the last part is freedom from the Fire. Whoever makes things easy for his slave in this month, Allah will forgive him and free him from the Fire. In this month, do four things in abundance. With two of them you will please your Lord, and you cannot do without the other two. As for the two with which you will please your Lord, they are: bearing witness that there is no true god except Allah, and seeking forgiveness from Him. And as for the two you cannot do without, they are: asking Allah for Paradise and seeking refuge with Him from the Fire. And whoever gives a fasting person a full meal in this month, Allah will give him to drink from my cistern, after which he will never feel thirsty until he enters Paradise.”
