Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while delivering the sermon on Friday, recited a verse. A man who was sitting beside Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "When was this verse revealed? For I have just now heard this verse." So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Subhan Allah." Thus, the man became silent. Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited another verse, that man again asked Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the same manner. So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) again said, "Subhan Allah," and made him silent. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said to that man, "You have not performed Jumu'ah with us." The man, in astonishment, said, "Subhan Allah," then he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the whole incident. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Ibn Umm Abd has spoken correctly — Ibn Umm Abd has spoken rightly."
