Hazrat Amr bin Abi Saeed narrates that I and Sayyiduna Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the service of Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), and we found him standing and performing prayer. Then he narrated the complete hadith and said: We returned in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until when we reached the place of Suqya or Qahah, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Who is the man who will reach this pond, retreat, close its holes, draw water from it, and fill our water skins before we arrive?" So I said, "I am present to do this work," and Sayyiduna Jabir bin Sakhr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I am such a person (who is ready to perform this service)." Thus, we walked on foot and reached the pond in the evening. We retreated, closed the holes of the pond, and drew water from it. Then we lay down and slept until half the night had passed, when a person came and stood at the pond. His she-camel was trying to pull him towards the pond while he was trying to restrain it by pulling its reins. Then he said, "Do you both permit me to drink water?" Suddenly, it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So we said, "Yes, may our parents be sacrificed for you." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) loosened the reins of the she-camel, and it drank water to its fill. Then Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) informed us that then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came near (to Madinah) until he made his she-camel kneel at the place of Batha in the region of 'Arj. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went for some need (and returned), so I poured water for him and he performed ablution. Then he wrapped himself in his cloak (and started prayer). I stood on his left side, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made me stand on his right side. Then another man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and stood on his left side. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) moved forward and led the prayer. We performed thirteen rak'ahs with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), including Witr. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the narrations of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that I spent the night at the house of my maternal aunt Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood for prayer at night, are related to this issue.
