نا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، نا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ
قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ، عَنْ مَعْدَانَ ، أَنَّ
عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ ، ثُمّ قَالَ : " يَأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ، إِنَّكُمْ تَأْكُلُونَ شَجَرَتَيْنِ مَا أَرَاهُمَا إِلا خَبِيثَتَيْنِ ، هَذَا الثُّومَ ، وَهَذَا الْبَصَلَ ، وَقَدْ كُنْتُ أَرَى الرَّجُلَ يُوجَدُ رِيحُهُ ، فَيُؤْخَذُ بِيَدِهِ ، فَيُخْرَجُ بِهِ إِلَى الْبَقِيعِ ، وَمَنْ كَانَ آكِلَهُمَا فَلْيُمِتْهُمَا طَبْخًا "
It is narrated from Ma’dan that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed the people on Friday and said: “O people, indeed you eat from these two plants, and to me both of them are foul-smelling—one is garlic and the other is onion. And I used to see a man from whose mouth (their) odor was perceived, so his hand would be taken and he would be led out towards Baqi’. (Therefore) whoever wishes to eat them should cook them well and remove their smell.”
