Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I spent the night at the house of my maternal aunt, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). When a portion of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up for the Tahajjud prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a hanging water-skin and performed a light ablution, then he stood and prayed. I also got up, performed ablution, and did everything just as the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had done. Then I stood on his left side. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned me and made me stand on his right side. Then, as much as Allah willed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed. Then he lay down and slept deeply until he began to snore. Then the mu’adhdhin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to inform him of the prayer, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proceeded (to the mosque) and led the prayer.
This is the hadith of Abdul Jabbar, and in the narration of Janab Makhzumi from Kurayb, these words are mentioned: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proceeded and led the prayer and did not perform ablution. It is said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), while describing the ablution of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), considered it to be of small quantity and did not say that he performed a light ablution.
