Hadith 1521

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people came to him who were disputing about what kind of wood the Prophet’s pulpit was made from and who had made it. Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Be aware, by Allah! I know very well what kind of wood it was made from and who made it, and I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) standing on it on the first day. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to such-and-such woman.” Abu Hazim says: “Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the name of that woman that day, but I have forgotten it, that she should order her carpenter slave to make a pulpit with steps for me so that I may stand on it and address the people.” She made three steps from the wood of the tamarisk tree at the place of Ghaba. And I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stand on it and say Allahu Akbar (and begin the prayer). The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) also said the takbir behind him (forming rows). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed (in ruku‘) on the pulpit and the people also bowed. Then he raised his head from ruku‘ and stepped down backwards, then prostrated at the base of the pulpit. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed the pulpit again until he completed his prayer. Then he turned to the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: “I did this so that you may follow me and learn the way I pray.”
