(30) بَابُ ذِكْرِ أَحَقِّ النَّاسِ بِالْإِمَامَةِ.30| Those most entitled to lead the prayer
Hadith 1507
نا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّوْرَقِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَاءٍ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى الصَّنْعَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ زُرَيْعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ رَجَاءٍ . ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُثْمَانَ ، وَسَلْمُ بْنُ جُنَادَةَ ، قَالا : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، قَالَ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ : حَدَّثَنَا فِطْرُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ ، وَقَالَ سَلْمٌ : عَنْ فِطْرٍ ، وَعَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَاءٍ ، عَنْ أَوْسِ بْنِ ضَمْعَجٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَؤُمُّ الْقَوْمَ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْقِرَاءَةِ سَوَاءً ، فَأَعْلَمُهُمْ فِي السُّنَّةِ ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي السُّنَّةِ سَوَاءً ، فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ فِي الْهِجْرَةِ ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْهِجْرَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ سِنًّا " . هَذَا حَدِيثُ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ . وَفِي حَدِيثِ شُعْبَةَ : " أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ ، وَأَقْدَمُهُمْ قِرَاءَةً " وَلَيْسَ فِي حَدِيثِهِ : " أَعْلَمَهُمْ بِالسُّنَّةِ "
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The one who should lead the people in prayer is the one among them who recites the Qur’an the most. If they are equal in recitation of the Qur’an, then the one who knows the Sunnah of the Prophet more should lead. If they are equal in knowledge of the Sunnah, then the one who migrated earlier among them should lead, and if they are also equal in migration, then the oldest among them should lead.” This hadith is from Abu Mu’awiyah. In Shu’bah’s narration, the words are: “Their leadership in prayer should be by the one who recites Allah’s Book the most and is most knowledgeable, and the one who is foremost in recitation should lead.” In his narration, the words “the one who knows the Sunnah more should lead” are not present.
