Hazrat Wahb bin Kaysan narrates that I was present in Makkah Mukarramah with Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) when he was the ruler. Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha came on a Friday, so he delayed going out (for Eid) until the day had advanced. Then he went out and sat on the pulpit and delivered a very lengthy sermon. Then he led two rak‘ahs (of Eid prayer) and did not perform the Jumu‘ah prayer. Some people from Banu Umayyah bin Abd Shams objected to this and criticized him. When Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) learned of this, he said that Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) had acted upon the Sunnah. When this reached Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: I saw Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that when two Eids (Eid and Jumu‘ah) would coincide, he would do the same. This is the narration of Ahmad bin Abadah. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The statement of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) had acted upon the Sunnah, it is possible that by this he meant that he had acted upon the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And it is also possible that he meant that he had acted upon the way of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, or Ali (may Allah be pleased with them all). And I do not think that giving the sermon before the Eid prayer was considered acting upon the Sunnah, because this act is against the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the way of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Rather, what was meant was only not performing the Jumu‘ah prayer, since he had already led the people in the Eid prayer. The intention was not to give the sermon before the Eid prayer.
