Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), on the day when the beloved son of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him), passed away, there was a solar eclipse. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the people in prayer with six bowings (ruku) and four prostrations (sajdah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir, then recited a long recitation, then performed a bowing as long as his recitation, then when he raised his blessed head from ruku, he recited a little less than the first recitation, then performed a bowing as long as that recitation, then when he raised his blessed head from ruku, he recited a little less than the second recitation, then performed a bowing as long as that recitation, then raised his blessed head, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bent down and performed two prostrations. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up (for the second rak’ah) and before performing the prostrations, he did three bowings, each bowing longer than the one after it, but the bowing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was equal to his standing. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved back in his prayer, the rows of people also moved back with him. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) moved forward, the rows also moved forward. Then when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, the sun had become bright. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O people, indeed the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah Almighty, and they do not eclipse because of the death of any human being. Therefore, when you see an eclipse, perform prayer until the sun becomes bright.”
