Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the sun was eclipsed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up to pray, and he recited aloud. Then he bowed (ruku) for as long as he had recited, then when he raised his blessed head from ruku, he recited again for as long as the first recitation, then he bowed again for as long as he had recited. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head and performed prostration (sujood). Then when he stood up for the second rak’ah, he did the same (recitation and bowing) as he had done in the first rak’ah. Then he said: “Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death of any human being. Therefore, when you see an eclipse, hasten to prayer (so that Allah may resolve your difficulty).” The narrator says that on that day (the beloved son of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) had passed away, so people began to say that the sun was eclipsed because of the death of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him).
