Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the sun was eclipsed and the noble Companions were present with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the (eclipse prayer), and he stood for a long time equal to the length of Surah Al-Baqarah, then he performed a very long bowing (ruku‘), then when he raised his (blessed) head from ruku‘, he stood for a long time, though less than the first standing. Then he performed a long ruku‘, which was shorter than the first ruku‘. Then he performed prostrations (sujood). Then he stood for a long time, which was less than the previous standing. Then he performed a long ruku‘, which was less than the ruku‘ of the first rak‘ah. Then he raised his (blessed) head. Then he stood for a long time, which was less than the previous standing. Then he performed a long ruku‘, which was shorter than the previous ruku‘. Then he performed prostrations and completed the prayer, by which time the sun had become clear and bright. (After finishing) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. Their eclipses do not occur due to the death or life of anyone. When you see an eclipse, remember Allah.” The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we saw you during the prayer reach out and grasp something, then we saw you step back in fear. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, I saw Paradise and tried to take a bunch of its grapes. If I had taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains (and it would not have finished). And I also saw Hell, and I have never seen a more terrifying sight than today, and I saw that most of its inhabitants are women.” The Companions asked: O Messenger of Allah, what is the reason for that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Because of their ingratitude.” It was asked: Do they disbelieve in Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “They are ungrateful to their husbands, they do not appreciate good treatment. If you were to treat one of them kindly for a long time, and then she saw something displeasing from you, she would say: ‘I have never seen any good from you.’” Janab Rau‘ narrates that the meaning of ‘Ashir’ is husband.
