Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet’s Mosque during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was built of bricks, its roof was made of palm branches, and its pillars were of palm wood. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did not add anything to it (during his era). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) expanded it (making it spacious and wide). He rebuilt it on the foundations from the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with bricks and palm branches, and had its pillars made of wood again. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) made changes to it and expanded it considerably. He had its walls built with decorated stones and lime, and its pillars constructed from decorated stones, and its roof made from fine teak wood. In the narration of Muhammad bin Yahya, the words are as follows: “And its pillars were made of palm wood. And he did not mention lime.”
