Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) make his mount sit down, then he dismounted from it and performed ten rak‘ahs and one witr. He (peace be upon him) performed two rak‘ahs at a time, then performed one witr, then performed the two sunnah rak‘ahs of Fajr, and then led us in the Fajr prayer. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that this narration explicitly states that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the two sunnah rak‘ahs of Fajr during travel. And those narrations which we have mentioned in Kitab al-Kabir, that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) overslept from the morning prayer until the sun had risen, and he (peace be upon him) performed the two sunnah rak‘ahs of Fajr and then led the Fajr prayer—(these too are evidence for the permissibility of performing nafl prayers during travel).
