وَاسْتِحْبَابِ تَرْكِ رَفْعِ الصَّوْتِ الشَّدِيدِ بِهَا، وَالْمُخَافَتَةِ بِهَا، وَابْتِغَاءِ جَهْرٍ بَيْنَ الْجَهْرِ الشَّدِيدِ وَبَيْنَ الْمُخَافَتَةِ قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ (وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا وَابْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ سَبِيلًا) (الْإِسْرَاءِ: 110). وَهَذِهِ الْآيَةُ مِنَ الْجِنْسِ الَّذِي كُنْتُ أَعْلَمْتُ أَنَّ اسْمَ الشَّيْءِ قَدْ يَقَعُ عَلَى بَعْضِ أَجْزَائِهِ، إِذِ اللَّهُ جَلَّ وَعَلَا قَدْ أَوْقَعَ اسْمَ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى الْقِرَاءَةِ فِيهَا، وَالْقِرَاءَةُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ جُزْءٌ مِنْ أَجْزَائِهَا لَا كُلُّهَا، وَإِنَّمَا أَعْلَمْتُ هَذَا لِيُعْلَمَ أَنَّ اسْمَ الْإِيمَانِ قَدْ يَقَعُ عَلَى بَعْضِ شُعَبِهِ
And the recommendation to avoid raising the voice excessively in it, and to recite it quietly, and to seek a manner between loudness and quietness. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: “And do not recite your prayer too loudly, nor too quietly, but seek a way between that.” (Al-Isra: 110). And this verse is of the kind which I have informed that the name of a thing may apply to some of its parts, as Allah, Glorified and Exalted, has applied the name of prayer to the recitation within it, and the recitation in prayer is a part of it, not the whole of it. I have mentioned this so that it may be known that the name of faith may apply to some of its branches.
نَا أَبُو يَحْيَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ صَاحِبُ السَّابِرِيِّ ، نَا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ السَّيْلَحِينِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ بِأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي يَخْفِضُ مِنْ صَوْتِهِ ، وَمَرَّ بِعُمَرَ يُصَلِّي رَافِعًا صَوْتَهُ ، قَالَ : فَلَمَّا اجْتَمَعَا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ لأَبِي بَكْرٍ : " يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ ! مَرَرْتُ بِكَ وَأَنْتَ تُصَلِّي تَخْفِضُ مِنْ صَوْتَكِ " , قَالَ : قَدْ أَسْمَعْتُ مَنْ نَاجَيْتُ ، " وَمَرَرْتُ بِكَ يَا عُمَرُ وَأَنْتَ تَرْفَعُ صَوْتَكَ " قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ احْتَسَبْتُ بِهِ أُوقِظُ الْوَسْنَانَ ، وَاحْتَسِبُ بِهِ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ لأَبِي بَكْرٍ : " ارْفَعْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ شَيْئًا " ، وَقَالَ لِعُمَرَ : " اخْفِضْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ " . قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : قَدْ خَرَّجْتُ فِي كِتَابِ الإِمَامَةِ ذِكْرَ نُزُولِ هَذِهِ الآيَةِ وَلا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلاتِكَ وَلا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا سورة الإسراء آية 110
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was performing prayer (Tahajjud) in a low voice, and he (peace be upon him) also passed by Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) who was performing prayer in a loud voice. Then when both of them came together to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Bakr, I passed by you while you were praying and reciting in a low voice." He replied, "The One with whom I was conversing has heard me." And (he said), "O Umar, I passed by you while you were reciting in a very loud voice." He replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I hope for reward from this, I wanted to wake up the sleeping one and I hope for reward in this." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Raise your voice a little." And he said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Lower your voice a little." Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I have mentioned the reason for the revelation of this verse « وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا وَابْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ سَبِيلًا » [ سوره الاسراء : 110 ] in the book Al-Imamah.
