Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in eight rak‘ahs and witr during Ramadan. Then, on the following night, we gathered in the mosque again, hoping that you (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to us (and lead us in prayer), so we remained in the mosque until morning came. We then presented ourselves before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, we were hoping that you (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to us and lead us in prayer.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I disliked that witr be made obligatory upon you.”
