Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The last person to enter Paradise will be the one who will be walking on the Bridge (Sirat) on his face. The Fire will scorch him, until when he crosses the Bridge, he will turn towards it and say, “Blessed is the One Who has saved me from you. By Allah, Allah has given me something that He has not given to anyone in all the worlds.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then a tree will appear before him and he will say, “O my Lord, bring me near to it so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The Lord will say, “O son of Adam! If I grant you this, you will ask Me for something else.” He will say, “No, my Lord,” and he will make a covenant that he will not ask for anything else, although the Lord knows that he will do so, for he will not be able to be patient over it. The Lord will bring him near to that tree. He will take shelter in its shade and drink from its water. Then another tree will appear before him, better than the first one, so he will say, “O my Lord, bring me near to it so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.” The Lord will say, “Did you not make a covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything else?” He will say, “Yes, my Lord, but bring me near to it so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water,” and he will make a covenant with the Lord that he will not ask for anything else besides that. The Lord will bring him near to it, although the Lord knows that he will ask for more, for the Lord knows that he will not be able to be patient over it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then another tree will appear before him near the gate of Paradise, more beautiful than the previous two trees. He will say, “O my Lord, bring me near to this tree so that I may take shelter in its shade and drink from its water.” The Lord will say, “Did you not make a covenant with Me that you would not ask Me for anything else besides this?” He will say, “Yes, my Lord, but bring me near to it.” When he is brought near to it, he will hear the voices of the people of Paradise, so he will say, “O Lord, admit me into Paradise.” Allah, the Exalted, will say, “O son of Adam, will it please you if I give you the world and as much again with it?” He will say, “O my Lord, are You mocking me while You are the Lord of all the worlds?” The Lord will say, “I am not mocking you, but I am able to do whatever I will.” The narrator says: Whenever Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) would mention these words, “Are You mocking me,” he would smile, then he would say: “Will you not ask me why I smiled?” He was asked: “Why did you smile?” He replied: “When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would mention this, he would smile.”
