Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Will we see our Lord?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When the sky is clear, do you face any difficulty in seeing the sun?” We replied, “No.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “On the night of the full moon, when the sky is clear, do you face any difficulty in seeing the moon?” We replied, “No.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “In the same way, you will have no difficulty in seeing your Lord, just as you have no difficulty in seeing these two. A caller will announce: Every nation will go and join that which they used to worship. So those who worshipped the cross will go with the cross. Those who worshipped idols will go with the idols. The followers of various deities will go with their deities, until only those who worshipped Allah, both righteous and sinful, will remain. Among them will be some people from the People of the Book. Then Hell will be brought and presented as if it is a mirage. It will be said to the Jews: Whom did you worship? They will reply: We worshipped ‘Uzair, the son of Allah. It will be said: You have lied. Allah has neither a wife nor a child. What do you want? They will say: We want You to quench our thirst. It will be said to them: Drink (from this mirage). So they will fall into Hell.
It will be said to the Christians: Whom did you worship? They will say: We worshipped the Messiah, the son of Allah. It will be said: You have lied. He has neither a wife nor a child. What do you want? They will say: We want You to quench our thirst. It will be said to them: Drink (from this mirage). So they too will fall into Hell, until only those who worshipped Allah, both righteous and sinful, will remain. It will be said to them: Why are you waiting? The others have gone. They will say: We are separate from them. We heard a caller announce that every nation should join that which they used to worship, so we are waiting for our Lord. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then the Mighty Lord, besides Whom there is no deity, will come to them. He will say: I am your Lord. Only the Prophets will speak with Him. Then it will be said: Is there any sign between you and Him by which you will recognize Him? The Muslims will say: The Shin. Then the veil will be lifted from the Shin, and every believer will fall in prostration before Him, and the one who used to prostrate for show and hypocrisy will remain. He will try to prostrate, but his back will become stiff. Then a bridge will be brought and placed over Hell. We asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is the bridge? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is a slippery place where one may fall. On it are hooks, thorns, and sharp things, like the thorns of a particular plant in Najd called Sa‘dan. Some believers will cross it in the blink of an eye, some like lightning, some like the wind, some like fast horses, and some like mounted men. Some will cross it safely, some will be scratched, and some will be affected by the flames of Hell, until the last of them will crawl across it. The truth will become clear to the believers at that time when they see that they have been saved, and some of their brothers remain, who will say: O our Lord, these are our brothers; they used to pray with us, fast with us, and do deeds with us. So the Lord will say: Go and take out from the Fire anyone in whose heart you find faith equal to the weight of a dinar. Allah will make their faces forbidden for the Fire. They will come to their brothers, some of whom will be engulfed up to their feet, some up to half their shins. Then they will come out of Hell. Then they will return again. Then He will say: Go and take out from the Fire anyone in whose heart you find faith equal to half a dinar. So they will take them out. Then they will come a third time, and it will be said: Go and take out from the Fire anyone in whose heart you find faith equal to the weight of a grain. So they will take them out.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: If you do not believe my words, then recite this verse: Allah, the Exalted, has said: “Indeed, Allah does not wrong even the weight of a speck. If there is a good deed, He multiplies it and grants from Himself a great reward.” Angels, Prophets, and the truthful will intercede. Then the Mighty, Blessed, and Exalted One, besides Whom there is no deity, will say: Now My intercession remains. Then the Compeller (Allah) will take out a handful of people from Hell, those who had been burnt to coal, and they will be thrown into a river called the River of Life. They will sprout forth in it as a seed sprouts forth in the silt carried by a flood. Have you not seen it at the edge of a rock or the base of a tree? The part facing the sun is green, and the part in the shade is white. So they will come out shining like pearls. Rings will be placed around their necks. They will enter Paradise, and the people of Paradise will say: These are the ones whom the Most Merciful has freed (from Hell). Allah will admit them into Paradise without any deed they did or any good they sent forth. It will be said to them: Whatever you see is yours, and the like of it as well. Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: It has reached me that the Bridge (Sirat) will be thinner than a hair and sharper than a sword.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The word “Shin” refers to severity (i.e., the matter will become severe).
