Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the Farewell Pilgrimage, I was with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). I became ill, to the extent that I reached the brink of death. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to visit me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have a lot of wealth and my only heir is one daughter. Should I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth (in charity)? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: No. I said: (Should I bequeath) half of it? He said: No. I said: (Should I bequeath) one-third? He said: Bequeath one-third, and one-third is still much. O Sa’d, if you leave your heirs well-off, it is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. O Sa’d! Whatever you spend for Allah’s pleasure, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you put in your wife’s mouth (you will be rewarded for that too). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will I be left behind by my companions? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: You will live on after me and will do such deeds by which you will seek Allah’s pleasure, and as a result, your rank and status will be elevated. It may be that you live on after me. Allah will benefit some people through you and harm others because of you. O Allah! Let the migration of my companions continue and do not turn them back on their heels. However, alas for Sa’d bin Khawlah.
(The narrator says:) The Prophet (peace be upon him) expressed sorrow for him because he died in Makkah.
