Ibn Hibban

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The example of the Muslims, Jews, and Christians is like that of a man who hired some people as laborers to work for him all day until night, and he would give them their wages for working until night. They worked for him until midday, then those laborers said: 'We have no need for the wages you have set for us, and the work we have done is wasted.' So that man said to them: 'Do not do this, complete the rest of your day and take your full wages.' But they did not accept this and left the work. Then that man hired other people after them as laborers and said: 'You work for the rest of the day, and I will give you the same wages I had set for those people.' So those people worked, until when the time of Asr came, they said: 'The work we have done is wasted, your wages that you set for us, we have no need for it.' So that man said: 'Complete your remaining work, for now only a little time is left until the end of the day.' (The narrator says) I think these words are also in the narration that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'But those people did not accept this.' Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'You worked from Asr until night (i.e., until the sun set).' This is the example of the Jews, the Christians, and the command of Allah Almighty which they abandoned, and the example of the Muslims who accepted the guidance of Allah Almighty and accepted what the Messenger of Allah brought."
