أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السَّامِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الْمَقَابِرِيُّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : " أَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنَ خَيْبَرَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ ثَلاثًا يَبْنِي بِصَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ حُيَيٍّ ، فَدَعَوْتُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِلَى وَلِيمَتِهِ ، فَمَا كَانَ فِيهَا مِنْ خُبْزٍ ، وَلا لَحْمٍ ، أَمَرَنَا بِالأَنْطَاعِ ، فَأُلْقِيَ فِيهَا مِنَ التَّمْرِ وَالأَقِطِ وَالسَّمْنِ ، فَكَانَتْ وَلِيمَتَهُ ، فَقَالَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ : إِحْدَى أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ هِيَ أَوْ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُهُ ، وَقَالُوا : إِنْ يَحْجُبْهَا ، فَهِيَ مِنَ أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَحْجُبْهَا ، فَهِيَ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُهُ ، فَلَمَّا ارْتَحَلَ وَطَّى لَهَا مِنْ خَلْفِهِ ، وَمَدَّ الْحِجَابَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ النَّاسِ " .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed for three days at a place between Khaybar and Madinah Munawwarah. He arranged the marriage of Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her). I brought the believers to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) for his wedding feast (walimah). There was neither bread nor meat in it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to bring a dining cloth, and on that cloth dates, cheese, and clarified butter were placed. This was the wedding feast of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Muslims said: Will she be counted among the Mothers of the Believers or will she be counted as a slave woman of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? Others replied: If the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) observes seclusion (hijab) for her, then she will be counted among the Mothers of the Believers; if he does not observe seclusion, then she will be counted as his slave woman.
(The narrator states:) When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to depart, he made a place for this woman behind him and drew a curtain between her and the people.
